35% of Vermont 3rd graders are testing below the proficient reading level and are more likely to drop out of school down the line.Through this platform, I am striving to increase access to age-appropriate literature so that every child has the chance to share in the joy of reading, achieve their academic goals, and advance on to a higher education.
Children who lack access to books are statistically more likely to discontinue their education; one way Let's Read is working to decrease this is by increasing these children's access to age appropriate literature so that they can develop the reading and writing skills they require to be successful in their education. However, the conversation doesn't end there. .
Check out the Let's Read Pamphlet, it's a great resource to connect community members with what we are doing and spread literacy advocacy

Maple And Marty's Reading Club
Maple is a dairy cow. There are 126,000 cows on 705 dairy farms in Vermont, helping to preserve 900,000 acres of land. Each dairy cow produces 128 glasses of milk a day; That's 16 million glasses of Vermont milk every day — that's a lot of milk!
in 2021, the state of Vermont produced over 1.5 million gallons of maple syrup, making it the top producer of maple syrup in the United States!
Marty is a monarch butterfly. Vermont designated the monarch (Danaus plexippus) as the official state butterfly in 1987.
Maple and Marty are reading buddies, and together they encourage children all across their beautiful home state of Vermont to read for at least 20 minutes per day.
Sign Up for Maple And Marty's Reading Club and pledge to read at least 20 minutes each day!
Spending 20 minutes each day is vital as children begin to identify letters, match letters to sounds, and start to recognize the beginning and ending sounds of words. Having stories read to them is crucial as they begin to develop literacy skills.
Every reader who signs up will be sent a downloadable Maple and Marty reading club bookmark and a reading tracker sheet.
Let’s Read Vermont Day

I’ve learned over the years that one of the best ways we can make a difference is by working together to educate and advocate. With Let’s Talk I’ll be featuring others who are out in their communities making a difference by increasing access to educational tools and advocating for literacy.
I am Emily Benz, a Maternal Newborn Registered nurse at the University of Vermont Medical center. I graduated from Castleton university in 2023. I was born and raised in Vermont and plan on staying here for years to come.
I started Let's Read in 2019 after being an elementary literacy tutor for 4 years. Since starting Let's Read, I have been able to collect and distribute over 3,000 books to children all across Vermont.
